About
I am an award-winning documentary filmmaker and science journalist who has worked for more than two decades as a television producer, director, writer, series producer, and executive producer – much of that time for PBS and on staff at NOVA. Currently, I am the Senior Producer at MIT Video Productions, the in-house production group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where I make videos and documentaries about all things MIT
I have a wealth of experience crafting compelling non-fiction stories for a general audience and creating innovative, visually spectacular productions. In addition to broadcast projects, I am also an experienced proposal writer and producer of video for the web and recently wrote a book that is the first and only visual history of Boston’s infamous and storied Charles Street Jail.
While on staff at NOVA, I was the executive producer of the four-part NOVA/PBS mini-series “The Fabric of the Cosmos” and also one of the series writers.
Before that, I wrote, produced and directed many other programs for NOVA including the three-part mini-series about string theory and modern physics called “The Elegant Universe,” for which I also served as Series Producer; the two hour special “Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial;” and more than a dozen other programs on everything from the engineering of the world’s tallest buildings to the formation of Earth, the rise of life, veterinary medicine, social robots, and the Indonesian tsunami. I have also written, produced and directed programs for NOVA’s magazine show ScienceNOW, National Geographic, The World Science Festival and worked for the PBS series AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and FRONTLINE.
My work has been recognized with many of the industry’s highest honors including three Peabody Awards; a New England Emmy Award and four national Emmy nominations including ‘best documentary’ and ‘outstanding science program;’ two AAAS Science Journalism Awards; a Writers Guild of America Award for Outstanding Documentary Script and four other WGA nominations for other scripts; and twice I was the finalist for the National Academies Communication Award.
I am a graduate of Yale University and was a 2005-2006 Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT.
